Around flowering plants, I watched pollen move low in the dry morning wind. The star-shaped flowers hold little nectar, and the small bees that visit them make only short circuits within the outcrop, never crossing to the next stone field. After fruiting, the dark, heavy seeds spill from split capsules at the parent’s base and are pushed by the first rains into crevices of the same serpentine gravel. A dense colony is therefore not evidence of easy spread, but of generations accumulating within a very small radius.

Along the old mine road near Mayari, I repeatedly heard that this plant should not be carried home in a tool bag. Stories say that a person who uproots it will find his field scorched or his well water turned harsh. Less a supernatural punishment than a practical reading of local stone and water, the warning preserves an ecological truth. People in the upland settlements treat the plant as something to be left on the guardian stone, and insist that only a twig tip may be taken.

In older pressed specimens, Outcrop Reader was often filed away as another silver-leaved serpentine shrub. Once dry, the dull gold of the flowers sinks to brown, the reflective leaves lose their sheen, and the thin microbial film on the roots disappears during cleaning. Its decisive character was not on the herbarium sheet, but in the field failure of plants moved only a few meters, where their roots burned and ceased growth. Thus the records existed, but the plant had no proper name.
