遠margin草は、ひび割れた乾いた泥土から立ち上がる高さ20cmほどの草。淡いleaf脈の走るオリーブ色のへら形のleafを低く広げ、淡い赤褐色の長い茎の先に、中心の暗い鈍い琥珀色の星形のflowerをひとつだけつける。地上では一株ずつ遠く離れて見えるのに、地下深くでは古い一本の根が横へ伸び、その第二層から離れた場所に芽を押し上げているらしい。湖岸が後退した年にだけ芽吹き、再びWaterが戻れば地上の姿は消え、根だけが乾いた泥の下で次の後退を待つ。別々に見える株が、本当はたった一つの個体なのか、誰もまだ確かめられていない。

湖が数キロ退いた年にだけ、ひび割れた泥土が現れます。
遠margin草は、その乾いたash褐色の地面に点々と芽吹きます。
地上では遠く離れているのに、地下深くでは古い一本の根がつないでいます。
In most years, Radix dispersa tschadensis raises its flower and withers without swelling into fruit. It merely sends another shoot from the old buried root, so the stand appears to increase without truly multiplying. Yet in years when the lake’s retreat lasts beyond two rainy seasons, small capsules remain at the base of the dull amber flower. The plant seems self-compatible when visitors are scarce; ripe seeds fall into mud cracks and rest there until the clay closes again.
The flower is not brightly colored, but on dry lake mud its muted amber stands out more than expected. By day, small bees and flies moving close to the ground would pause briefly on the star-shaped disk, brushing their bodies against the dark center. The long stalk does not seem built to resist wind; rather, it lifts only the flower above the shadows of the cracks and into a low flight path.
Fishers and herders on the eastern shore read the spacing of this plant as a memory of water level. In years when its shoots appear sparsely over a wide distance, both the boat landing and the moist grazing ground have moved farther away. The name “one grass blooming apart” speaks not only of a connected root, but also of a life in which the lake’s retreat was measured by walking it.
